Psychology 132 3-19-08 Endocrine System – glands that secretes hormone into blood stream. Pancreas – insulin Ovaries – progesterone Testis – testosterone **all controlled by hypothalamus and pituitary gland*** Hypothalamus – CNS “center for regulating “motivated” behavior. The pituitary gland is the “master” endocrine gland which secretes any number of hormones that zct at other endocrine gland inducing them to release/stop releasing their hormones Hormone: chemical messengers - hormone molecule travel in bloodstream - acts on RECEPTORS on other cells within the body - hormone acting on receptor causes “something to happen” typically activation of some cellular process Insulin is a hormone - secreted by Pancreas - Acts o Insulin RECEPTORS on other cels within the body - Hormone acting on receptor causes metabolic activity in some cells (live) to convert glucose to glycogen Testosterone is a hormone - secreted by Testes - acts on testosterone RECEPTORS on other cells witin the body
