January 31, 2008 Measuring Variables Some of the most common - -Demographic information: characteristics of the participants such as gender, ethnicity, occupation, etc. -Self report scale: questions about a persons beliefs or attitudes (about the self, an issue, or any topic) Writing a question- -Question wording is crucial for respondent understanding -Response format is how you collect the answer from the respondent -Response format can be structured or unstructured Structured Response Format- -Fill in the blank -Check answer -Circle answer - Dichotomous Response Format (2 answers) -Ex: did you vote last year? Yes/no -Ex: are you male/female? - Likert (or interval level) response format -Ex: do you enjoy watching TV? 1 2 3 4 5 not at all very much Unstructured Response Format- - Written Text -Ex: Tell me about your experience with the writing center- _________________________________________ _________________________________________ -Pro: more information -Con: harder to organize and use information Issues around response issues given 1) What is the most important problem facing the US today? 2) What is the biggest problem facing the US today energy shortage, quality of public schools, etc… -For question 1, only 1% mentioned public education as the biggest problem whereas for question 2, 32% chose public education
