2 Selecting Texts for Emergent and Beginning Literacy Learners To meet your students' needs, you must be selective when choosing texts for them. As we have discussed over the last couple of weeks, you can have learners on different levels within your classroom. Students can range from emergent readers and beginning literacy learners. In this week's learning resources Dr. Hartman explained a tool designed for selecting texts for your literacy learners. It is made up of four parts: narrative texts, informational texts, linguistic and semiotic. It is meant to show if the selected text works with your assigned student and helps them meet a specific goal (Laureate Education, 2014). This paper will choose a theme comprised of a narrative text, informational text, and digital text used for my emergent and beginning literacy learner. I've realized that reading is a struggle for students within my classroom because they lack motivation. Ciampa (2012) explained the importance of motivation when it comes to reading. For students to become strong readers, it is essential that they feel motivated to do so. Students will be more successful if they feel engaged in the reading selection (p. 2). The theme I have chosen to focus on is being unique or being you. The students would enjoy stories based on this
