Biblical Command to Help the Needy The command from God of helping others less fortunate appears quite frequently within the pages of the Bible. Acts 20:35 reminds us that as followers of Christ, we are to “help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (NIV). Proverbs 22:9 also states that “whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.” In other words, if we faithfully give and provide to those less fortunate, God promises a life of prosperity in exchange for our generosity. Socialist/Communist Economy The idea of a socialistic or communist society made great sense to one of its originators, Karl Marx, because he felt that this system would create more equality amongst the different social classes thus preventing constant socioeconomic conflict. The system places the power strictly in the hands of the state and/or government allowing the rest of society to be classless, working together for the greater good of all. In terms of helping those less fortunate, this economy would provide true equality and freedom allowing all people to have access to the basic resources needed to be prosperous in any environment. Karl Marx along with Friedrich Engels explained in Manifesto of the Communist Party that “the condition for the free development of each is the free development of all,” thus further supporting their societal views. Free Market Economy A free market economy allows private ownership of production entities and allows more individual say in determining how goods and services are distributed.
