De’Anthony Fletcher Fela Upon hearing anything about this play Fela or going to see it I had no intentions of learning about him. Once I was told that I had to go see this play I still didn’t care about it. I only cared that if it was worth my money since it was mandatory for me to pay and go see a play of such nature. Once my teacher started explaining to us the producers and people behind it, I sort of gained a little bit of excitement to go see this play. I really enjoy dancing and knowing that this would broaden my scope on African dance I was much more eager to attend. I attended the award winning Broadway musical Fela on February 15, 2012. The play was put together by a few celebrities such as Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and Will & Jada Pinkett Smith. The play Fela was about a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Fela was a political activist, composer and a pioneer of Afrobeat music. Fela’s music was very popular throughout the African communities. Afrobeat is a pounding eclectic rhythm (drawn from music traditions around the globe) mixed with incendiary lyrics to openly attack the corrupt and repressive military that ruled Nigeria and much of Africa. Fela was played by two people in the play. The guy who played most of the Fela role was named Sahr Ngaujah, while the alternative was played by a guy named Adesola Osakalumi.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
