Lecture 8 (10/12/06): Cylinder seals are small with rich iconography and some “writing” o Mostly pertaining to the Gods o Starts in Uruk, what about elsewhere? The First Conjuncture ~3300BC o Colonialism and imperialistic expansion Exploiting weaker people/military conflict o Moving from south Mesopotamia into foreign cultures o Established new cities controlling smaller/weaker o Uruk is a resource pour area Commerce and trade started the expansion Moved out to extract resources and to control trade roots No archeological proof for this theory because much did not last Why answer not answered Pottery, architecture, seals, etc. show that these “foreign” cities were in fact Uruk Establishing missionaries? This transition of (Uruk) advancement fails for no reason o People do not adopt writing, seals, etc. takes up to 500 years before this happens o Aware but do nothing o The Uruk cities/colonies are lost Don’t accept the technology When talking about Uruk = Sumerians they speak Sumerian (extinct) Sumerian and Acadian are different family of languages (i.e. English and Japanese) o 3 rd is Elonate found in Susa Uruk evidence found all the way to Pakistan o Looking at the architecture, pottery, etc. from different colonies are similar Habuba Khabira an Uruk colony on the Upper Euphrates (around for about 200 yrs) o Control river traffic o Fortification system (substantial wall) o Built a temple similar to that of Uruk o However, shows abandonment because nice material and items are left behind that they would take Godin Tepe NW Iran, Sumerian o Like Habuba Khabira colony walled off from indigenous city o No mixing of culture

Adopt nature tech.? o Natives don’t except the Sumerians either Acadians phase out the Sumerians over time Elamites last language o Susa Sumerian colonized o Elamites adopt writing, seals, and other social technologies but change it from Sumerian Only community that adopted Uruk stuff o Elamites proceed to exodus like the Sumerians to the Iranian Plateau Own language, beliefs, and writing o Susan text in colonies deal with the household sized economy Use state level sophistication on a village size scale o Tepe Yahya showing proto-Elamite colony w/ adopted Sumerian cultures Seals, tablets, and measurements differed Proto-Elamite doesn’t last more than 150 years o Iran not literate for 1000 year Ur ~2600BC o one of many excavations not published Sir Lenard Woolley Wolley was very meticulous of his day o shows that there was a “middle class” in this society considerable prosperity in these sites private homes show the middle class with the daily life o burials are lavish and elitist in Mesopotamia Ur ‘Royal Cemeteries’
