Xie History 190 Andrew Goble Tian Xie Oct 12 th Question: What property rights did women have? What type of education did they receive? Was it possible for women to have a formal role in government? According to literatures which archaeologist found out, it is true that during the Heian era, women held almost equality rights as men in property rights, education, marriage and other aspects. Women at that time were relatively free to write whatever they want to express their feelings. In addition, their works are even more formal and classic than some of men’s literatures. People believe that women played an important role in developments of Heian period. Women can own a property and they were able to pass on to the heirs they want. At that time, gender and sexuality are as common and necessary part of people’s lives.

Women did not go to school much, but they have to learn how to write Japanese, how to write poetry, and music. It is very possible for women to participate a big role in government. In the Heian period, although men generally seized power of political. However, women who married them created special alliances so that women can seriously influence the political thing.
