He joined the society of Katipunan at the age of 23, a movement that sought the Philippines' independence from Spanish colonial rule and started the Philippine Revolution. They formed the secret chamber of a society called Camara Reina, together with Andrés Bonifacio and Emilio Jacinto. He tried to persuade the exiled José Rizal to join the revolutionary movement.
