Objective: The objective of this lab was to introduce us, the students, to Diodes and other nonlinear elements, also to show how to make an I-V curve using measurements taken from the DMM’s. Circuit Diagrams/ Schematics: Figure 1: Basic circuit layout for 2 DMM and a DUT Equipment and Supplies: - Handheld Digital Multimeter: Model #CM2400A - Digital Multimeter: Model #34401A - Triple output DC Power Supply: Model #E36303A - 2 1KΩ Resistors - 1N4148 Silicon Diode - 1N5232B Zener Diode - LED Procedure: Step 1: The procedure found on page 36 of the Lab Manual states that one should first put in the 1KΩ resistor in as the DUT. Instead of doing that, for our lab we decided to start off by using the LED. When measuring for the I-V curve of it we followed the intervals of -12V up to 1V and from 1V we moved in .1V segments up to 1.8V. We received the I-V curve that we had expected to see. See Figure 2. We followed the procedure on page 36-37 of the Lab Manual. When we had the 1N4148 (General Silicone Diode) installed as the DUT we took its measurements for the I-V curve starting at -12V up till there was no voltage source at all (0V) and from 0V we went to 1V in .1V increasing increments. See Figure 3. Figure 3: General Diode in circuit as DUT Step 3: We followed the procedure on page 37 of the Lab Manual. When we installed the 1N5232B Zener diode in as the DUT we measured the I-V curve following the intervals of .1V from -6V to -5V, and in increments of 1V from -5V to no voltage source (0V), then from 0V to 1V in .1V increments. See Figure 4. Figure 4: Zener Diode in circuit as DUT Step 4: As mentioned in Step 1 of our procedure we originally tested the LED first as oppose to the 1KΩ resistor. In step four we followed the original step one found on page 36 of the Lab Manual. Installing the 1KΩ resistor in as the DUT we measured for the I- V curve in intervals of 1V from -12V up to 12V. See Figure 5.
