TOPIC 5 DQ 1: The theoretical foundations of qualitative and quantitative methods are very different, but many researchers believe both methods should be used in the research study to increase validity and reliability. What advantages or disadvantages do you see in using both types of methods in a nursing study? Support your answer with current evidence-based literature. Quantitative and qualitative methods of research approach studies from two different angles but both can be beneficial and complement each other. Integrating the two methods together can allow quantitative and qualitative methods to validate each other due to the data and findings and using both research methods may give a better and complete picture of the area investigated compared to only using one research method (Kelle, 2006). Also, mixed-methods or combining qualitative and quantitative research can help with the limitations of each of these types of research. Quantitative design can help in the selection of cases in qualitative research because it may be a small study and results from qualitative interviews can help to recognize
