LINEAR FUNCTION The degree of linear functions is one . Graph is a line . If the slope is positive , the line rises to the right . If the slope is negative , the line falls to the right . If the slope is zero , the line is horizontal . The slope of a vertical line is undefined .
LINEAR FUNCTIONS IN THE FORM y = mx + b f(x) = mx + b
LINEAR FUNCTION A linear function is defined by f(x) = mx + b where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept , m and b R. Є The y-intercept is the point (0, b). Linear functions who do not pass through the origin are sometimes called as affine functions .
LINEAR FUNCTION y = mx + b is the line y = mx shifted the graph b units vertically. The graph will shift b units upward if b is positive , and downward if b is negative . m determines the steepness of the line.
LINEAR FUNCTION EXAMPLE 1: Is f(x) = 2x + 3 a linear function? If yes, determine the slope m and y – intercept b.
