Poverty in America 1 Research Paper: Poverty In America Colby Dixon Liberty University
Poverty in America 2 Poverty in America There are several social problems within the Human Service Profession. One that hit close to home for me is poverty. Poverty is not having enough material possessions or income for a person's needs. “Today, America is described to have the highest level of the poverty rate to other industrialized countries.” (Garcia, 2011) . Poverty affects women and people of color. African Americans have the highest poverty rate of any ethnic group in America. Poverty relates to homelessness and health problems. Poverty leads people having ill health, which ill health can put people at risk of becoming poor. Poverty has been a consistent problem throughout US history. There will always be people who are homeless and hungry, despite income, unemployment, or overall prosperity level. There are different ways poverty can be identified, absolute, relative, situational, situational, generational, rural, and urban are different types of poverty. Absolute poverty is when the basic needs of life are not met because the household income is below a certain level. In absolute poverty, even if the country is growing economically it does not affect people living below the poverty line. People living in absolute poverty, still find it impossible to find food, shelter, education, healthcare. Relative poverty is when households are not living in total poverty but still do not have enough money to afford anything above the basics needs to live. People living in relative poverty, become trapped in a low-income box forever. “Situational poverty is caused by a turn in the national economy or household. Situational poverty has two types cyclical and assets. Cyclical depends on the high and low of the national and global economy. Assets are triggered by a crisis specific to those experiencing poverty.” (Vale, 2016) Middle-class and low-income households are affected by this. People experience situational poverty usually bounce back from their setback than people that experience generational poverty. People that

Situational poverty is caused when a person or household is decreased due to a specific change, such as job loss, divorce, death. Situational poverty is addressed by the government in the form of temporary aids and other benefits.
