Mark Bluemke Response paper 2 Throughout Svidrigailov’s life he has lived with the mindset and belief that the ends justify the means, and his ends are all that matters – even at the expense of many others. Even when he raped the young mute girl and later learned that she hung herself, he did not feel any remorse or responsibility. All of his past “successes” have been achieved through his sly and dishonest way of life. After a late night, at the end of his long walk along the ------y Prospect, he came to a hotel. He learned from the “ragamuffin” that this was a nice place that had fine accommodations. Svidrigailov thought that if this was a nice place he, certainly, certainly should have known about it. This was the first circumstance of the night in which he comes to grip with the fact that he does not know everything – that he is not who he thought he was. Once in his room, he examined it in detail, only to realize that it too, is not what it was said to be.
