Avi Kolel 10-08-07 Critique of calcium-dependent smooth muscle excitatory effect elicited by the venom of the hydrocoral Millepora complanata The article Calcium-dependent smooth muscle excitatory effect elicited by the venom of the hydrocoral Millepora complanata was written based on research looking at the affect of Fraction V and Fraction VIII on smooth muscle tissue of Millepora complanata . This research is being conducted because not a lot is known about this coral and because being part of reefs that contain many tourists, fire coral affects many people each year. M. complanata , commonly known as fire coral, releases toxins as a defense mechanism, this is thought to be caused due to muscle contraction. At the time this article was written, there was not much understood about the process of envenoment. The main purpose of the research is to have a pharmacological understanding of the mechanisms of M. complanata. After isolation of the coral samples and extraction of the subject proteins a guinea-pig ileum assay was used to determine the activity of those proteins in variable
