Historical Analysis: The Understanding of History of Sport and it's Evolution Through the Establishment of Modern Hockey Sport is something that has evolved for generations. It simply was not established overnight or easily. The establishment of sport was struggled, negotiated, and compromised over. In Hockey Night in Canada Gruneau and Whitson write, "the history of sport is better understood as a history of cultural negotiation, compromise, and struggle". This statement can be applied to the development of modern hockey. Hockey was a long process to becoming what we know as modern hockey today. Hockey was negotiated, compromised, and struggled over before it became modern hockey. Hockey went from a leisure time activity in Canada to an organized institutional sport. The first development of hockey was unorganized and understood as fun entertainment more than a sport. The first hockey games were played outside on frozen ice and had not established rules, uniforms, etc. People would go and watch these first
