Thang NguyenPhil 102BProfessor LopezNovember 14th, 2011Week 12 Journal: Confucius’s AnalectsQuote 8 from Book 1: this particular quote strikes as the most resemble familiar in comparison to Aristotle’s virtue ethics. “A gentleman who lacks gravity does not inspire awe.” Confucius really emphasizes that one should rise above the ordinary and try to be better, be as good as one can possible be and hence grasps the “gravity”. Confucius goes on to focus on the fact that one needs the education and knowledge in order to be as good as he or she can by saying “A gentleman who studies is unlikely to be inflexible. Actually this is ancient China, women were not allowed to go to schools and study but this is a statement that should be aimed toward all individuals. By acquiring as much knowledge as possible, one has a better ability to deal with the situations that he or she is in and be less “inflexible” about it. Of course being the
