The Department of Defense, Colorado’s largest federal employer, accounts for more than 11,200 workers across the state. The combination of the department’s hiring reform initiative and high-profile deals has led to increasing employment payrolls over the last few years. The U.S. Postal Service, on the other hand, is facing significant losses and could close more than 16% of the state’s post offices over the next few years as a result of declining mail volumes and the loss of revenue amid the economic downturn.
