Repair and Maintenance Services includes four subsectors: automotive repair, commercial machinery, electronic equipment, and household goods. The sector has been negatively impacted in the past several years by a persistently stagnant construction industry. Consumer spending on repairs is heavily influenced by the macroeconomy. Growth in the sector has been limited as a result of the slow economic recovery. Many consumers are holding off on repairs until a better time. However, in August 2011, national consumer spending on services increased 1.9% year-over-year, indicating a more optimistic outlook for this sector. Automotive repair and maintenance accounts for the largest portion of all Repair and Maintenance Services Sector employment.
