Unformatted text preview: in Colorado. About 75% of Colorado households use natural gas as their primary energy source for home heating, one of the highest shares in the United States. In 2010, gas producing wells in Colorado totaled more than 40,000, with a total production of just over 1.57 trillion cubic feet. Colorado is a net exporter of natural gas—66% of its natural gas production is transported to California and Midwest markets. The 1,679-mile Rockies Express Pipeline (REX), which became fully operational in November 2009, moves natural gas from Colorado to eastern Ohio, with a maximum capacity of 1.8 billion cubic feet per day. In August 2011, Kinder Morgan, which owns and operates REX, indicated it is considering reversing the flow of the pipeline to deliver natural gas to the west from the East Coast. This reversal could help remedy a mismatch in supply and demand, and ultimately lead to more uniform gas pricing across the nation.
