The La Plata County economy is highly seasonal due to impact of tourism and construction. Although winter tourism and sports are significant, most La Plata County tourism occurs during the summer. This summer concentration causes an annual July-September seasonal upswing in economic indicators, such as retail sales and employment. La Plata County’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in September 2011 was 5.5%. This rate is still well below the not seasonally adjusted rate for Colorado (7.6%) and the nation (8.8%). The presence of major organizations such as Walmart and the Mercy Regional Medical Center in La Plata County provide some stability to the local economy, particularly in labor markets.
