Cigarette Taxes and Youth Smoking This research question is trying to determine if increases in tobacco taxes causes an effect in youth smoking usage. This is a very important issue because decreasing smoking in teens is always a goal of the government. Additionally, over the 1990s, many studies found there was a correlation between higher taxes and a reduction in teenage smoking. However, with new and improved data studies, the authors wanted to make sure the information held true. Furthermore, it was important to test out the data on youth smoking habits for a few reasons. First, youths have greater price-elastic demand than other age groups. This fact basically means that a change in the price of cigarettes would affect youth purchasing more than anyone else. Additionally, along those same lines, youths have less established habits than other age groups. For example, a change in tobacco taxes would have a greater effect on a 19-year old who has been smoking for 1 year, rather than a 50-year old who has been smoking every day for 30 years.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
