The Impact of State Physical Education Requirements on Youth Physical Activity and Overweight This research question is definitely important because physical education is slowly dying out in public schools. Advocates, such as medical and public health organizations, claim that it’s vital to keeping kids active and in shape, while opponents believe that PE just takes away from learning in the classroom. Childhood overweight and obesity have strongly increased over the past three decades. As previously stated, obesity is also a large negative externality because others must pay for increased health care due to risk pools. The question is difficult to answer for a few reasons. First, there is not necessarily enough enforcement in PE classes to make sure that all students are participating equally and at a high level. The data could definitely be affected if they increase PE time, for example, but half of the students decide not to exercise as much of the rest of them. This fact will definitely be a reason for increased measurement error. Additionally, the authors
