It affects 127 million American adults, is the second leading cause of preventable death in the States behind smoking, and is considered a chronic disease. Obesity is referred to as the excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body. It is caused by three main factors. The first of which is heredity. Some people have a genetic tendency to gain weight and store fat. Secondly, our environment has a great impact on obesity. A household that allows one to eat unhealthy foods and not exercise will cause a gain in weight. Lastly, behavior can determine physical health. Personal habits no matter what environment you may live in can drastically affect your weight. As J. Clinton Smith said in his book Understanding Obesity, “we reward ourselves at the end of the day with big meals and evenings of watching television. We are sports enthusiasts, but frequently avoid physical activity” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of adults who are overweight or obese has increased over the years. In 1988, 56% of American adults were overweight and 23% were obese. Those stats have risen dramatically to 64.5% and 30.5%, respectively in the year 2000. The increase however, is not limited to adults. The percentage of obese young people has more than tripled since 1980. As the percentage increases, more and more Americans will be prone to a numerous amount of health risks. Obesity increases the risk of illness from about 30 serious medical conditions. Some of
