Psychology of Human SexualityNovember 21stLecture NineMarilyn Fithian – 134 orgasms for women Bailey & Greenberg-A lot of controversy -Gayugenics -There was a question if they were going to find the “gay genes”, they said you cannot publish thisresearch – they thought he was talking about aborting gay babies. They were afraid people were going to start aborting gay babies-He is very clear – its not just people who are pro gay people who want to know they are born that way – there are also homophobes who would want to “cure” gay-Argument – if a woman can abort a baby for any reason (superstition, financial) a woman should be able to abort a baby for any reason is the argument -If you are pro-choice why would it not be ok to abort a gay baby – from a consistency standpoint-If you look at arguments he provides – if you are saying abortion is ok (women can have abortions for anything) then you should be ok with that. Same as if you are refraining from doingor eating something that could cause your baby to be gay-Parents who have gay gene so a chance that their baby is going to be gay so they don’t want to conceive – same as huntingtins -The argument is that you are saying that homosexuality is a disease – just like these other diseases or disorders. The people who have down syndrome within their family should be equally offended, that is a human being – are we saying that these people are less of a person?-No one is arguing to abort gay babies – they are speaking about the consistency of arguments -Neutral – nothing to do with being anti-gay, parent might want lineage to continue – gay child adopting someone else’s baby this is not continuing gene pool. Maybe they realize that a gay child is going to have a different lifestyle from them, and they are very conservative and they willnot match this lifestyleProfessor is pro-choice for abortion-Believes it is the women’s body, it is their choice -Just his opinion – he has not place in the debate-Impossible to be able to have a consistent argument about the pro-choice part-He says it is infringing on the rights of a human beingPolyamory – consensual non-monogamous relationships – open relationships-No evidence that human are biologically destined to be monogamous – meant to be polygamous-Polygamous – one person with lots of other partners-Polyginous one person with many females -Polyandry – one female many males-Polyandry – multiple loves or lovers-When people argue about what humans are designed to be – the traditional argument is that (men researcher) women are meant to be monogamous, men are meant to be polygamist -Polygenist -Perfect sense from an evolution perspective for humans to have monogamous relationships for male and female to raise child – both men and women benefit-Not about having babies it is about raising them
-Professors theory is that the most important goal of human function is to master your environment It also makes sense for men to take part in polygamy – the only one reason this does not happen today
