3/22/18 Hacktivism First started using this term in the 1990’s - Started by Cult of the Dead Cow - Hacktivismo (independent affiliation) - Believed access to information space is a human right (net neutrality) - Worked to create ant – censorship software – for countries with human right problems - Declared war in 1995 on El Ron Hubbard “range of political practices that make creative use of info technology or technical and software hacks that have explicit political goals” Annonymous: - Formed in 2004 through 4chan, message board based website - 4chan has no registered users, anonymity - Guy Fawkes – masked face - Collective community, started out as fun (lulz) - No official membership or leader - Raids – members who raid social networking sites and video games - Habbo Hotel – Habbo is social network service aimed at teens Project Chanology 2008 attack on Scientology - Video released video of Tom Cruise praising the church - Scientology sued Gawker for posting it - Height of anonymous (believe in the first amendment) - members use low grade DDoS software to crash scientology sites, done by members of 4chan - low orbit ion canon – large institutional based capable of large DDoS attacks, created to test bandwidth - active protests Operation Payback 2009 – political fighting within anonymous, began as fun but grew “Moralfags” v “lulz” - Those who want to cause chaos for fun - Members split within the group Pirate Bay - Film studios paid software developer to DDoS websites the copyright infringement - Anonymous DDoS attacks against MPAA and RIAA
- Go after service provider not the ones who individually upload video WikiLeaks - Anonymous DDoS against conspirators because PayPal/credit card companies disallowed gifting money to WikiLeaks - Had to rely on botnet, collective effort wasn’t enough - First time they couldn’t rely on the number of people in their group Anonymous Video Notes - Use scare tactics to gain followers - Have a good message to an extent but they don’t do anything to actually fix the problem other than say there is a problem - Don’t hate others, Lulzsec Formed in 2010-2011 – for members of hacking groups “laughing at your security since 2011” - Just for fun, not as serious as other members - Attack popular news - Infragaurd – gov. affiliated data - 50 days of lulz, “marathon” of hacking then put all info collected on website - Poor password security and corporate security Lizard Squad (2014) - Rely on DDoS - Target video games during high usage hours (Christmas etc…) - More likely to be younger perpetrators - Many false claims, bomb threats and facebook attacks - Only lasted about 6 months before disbanding State sponsored - Syrian Electronic Army – Turkish/Syrian - APT28 – Russian
