Running head: PHARMACIST INTERVIEW 1 Pharmacist Interview Jennifer Chitwood Galen College of Nursing NSG3150 – Nursing Informatics
PHARMACY REVIEW 2 Pharmacy Interview Introduction The Interview Results What type of technology (technologies) does your pharmacy utilize? Electronic Prior Authorization software Ohio Automated Rx Reporting System Frameworks How does the technology you use enhance internal communications between pharmacists, technicians, physicians, advanced medical care providers, and nurses? Electronic Prior Authorization software i.e. Cover My Meds – This allows the pharmacy to input information about the medication that needs a prior auth and then allows the physician/PA/NP to go when they are able to finish the process. The system makes the PA process almost instantaneous once all of the information is input into the system. Ohio Automated Rx Reporting System (OARRS): This system allows the pharmacist to track the dispensing of controlled prescription medications to patients. It is utilized as an important source of information with regard to suspected drug abuse or diversion. OARRS enables the pharmacist to search each patient he or she suspects of abuse or diversion and where they had controlled medications dispensed to them. The pharmacist can then contact various prescribers and ensure that proper prescriptions were written for the patients and take further action with legal authorities if necessary. Frameworks: This is the dispensing software at the pharmacy i.e. what the pharmacy uses to check each individual script. It has various functions: drug-drug interactions, allergies the patient has related to the medication prescribed, wrong dose, and therapeutic duplications. This allows us to get in contact with the prescriber or the nurse quicker to address any issues with the medication so that there is no significant delay for the patient receiving appropriate therapy. Frameworks program also has different functions that allow for documentation of interactions a pharmacist had with a nurse, physician, or patient on the script. This documentation is stored for the appropriate amount of time on servers to ensure compliance with State and Federal guidelines. These documents within the system can be viewed by other pharmacists to know what is going on with a certain prescription and what still needs to be completed on a prescription. Also the document can be sent directly to a prescriber to sign or to a nursing home to get clarifying information.
PHARMACY REVIEW 3 Describe the process from the time an order is received by the pharmacy to the time the medication is dispensed? Once an order is received by the pharmacy by facsimile or e-script it is automatically placed in the Order Entry Queue. The prescription waits in the queue until an order entry technician is able to input the order into Frameworks (the pharmacy software that will eventually generate a script to place on the bottle etc.).
