1 Mohney Hayes Mohney James Hansen Hist 3510 12 February 2013 What Would Have Happened if John Kennedy Lived On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union put the world on notice by sending Sputnik into space. This action was heralded across the world for this achievement and what the possibilities could bring. Many Americans, especially in 1960, saw a discrepancy between the two current superpowers in missile technology. Kennedy was not too keen on building a space program, but he was more interested in the prestige and reputation of the United States against the Soviet Union. Initially Kennedy was preoccupied with this chase against the archenemy, but he gradually opened up to the idea of cooperation with the Soviets. At the start of his term, Kennedy was more preoccupied with the competition with the Soviets than anything else. He was not focused on the development of the space program, just to advance it. Instead, he was more concerned with playing against the Soviet Union in this new “game,” especially after the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba. The invasion was not a primary reason why Kennedy pushed the space program, but it certainly affected him in the sense that he
