FIRE SAFETY PROVISIONS (TO SUPPRESS A FIRE) Before allocating proper fire safety provisions, Fire Safety Objectives shall be well aware of. These will affect design of floor layout, building massing and structural systems. 7
COMPLIANCE The adequate of fire safety provisions in a building should be demonstrated by complying with the Performance Requirements of various codes. Compliance can be achieved by : (a) Complying with the Deemed-to-comply provisions ( Prescriptive approach ) of various codes, or (b) Formulating an Alternative Solution which complies with the Performance Requirements ( Fire Engineering Approach ) or (c) A combination of (a) and (b) 8
Fire protection system Fire safety provisions means the installations, equipment, systems, building elements or methods used in a building to achieve the fire safety objectives. The provisions include active and passive fire safety provisions : Fire protection system Active Passive 2
FIRE SAFETY PROVISIONS (a) Passive fire safety provisions, They are mainly structural and building components to contain or slow the spread of fire, eg, fire resisting construction, fire retardants, wall lining with low combustibility, smoke seals, fire rated doors (b) Active fire safety provisions, These are provisions/systems that are characterized by the actions and response of the provisions/system taken against fire in order to alert, suppress and/or extinguish it, eg, sprinkler system, detectors and alarms system & etc
Passive fire protection Passive Fire Safety Protection – Aim Building materials that are used within the construction of the building to: 1.Limit the growth and spread of fire within the building with use of fire rated walls and doors; 2.Reduce the amount of damages of the building inflicted by the fire; 3.Avoid the collapse of the building structure; 4.Reduce the possible life and health risks of the building occupants and the fire fighters; Therefore, passive fire protection provides the building with the strength to withstand fire for a certain period of time, ensuring the safe evacuation of its occupants and the safety of the building surrounding it. 12
Passive fire protection Passive Fire Protection - Methods FireWalls Fire Doors Fire-resistant glasses Fire Resistance rated floors Occupancy Separations Fire Dampers Fire Stops Cable Coating Fire Proofing Cladding Fire Damper Fire Stops Cable Coating Fire ResistantGlass Video Passive Fire Protection and Firestop Compartmentation 13
Passive fire protection Passive Fire Protection - Compartment Passive fire protection includes compartmentalization of the overall building through the use of fire-resistance rated walls and floors .
