Special Relativity CAPTAIN EINSTEIN: A VR EXPERIENCE OF RELATIVITY For this laboratory exercise, you will watch the virtual reality (VR) movie “Captain Einstein”. This movie, which takes you on a boat trip in a world where the speed of light is only 20 km/h, allows you to explore a world in which the effects of relativity are evident. In Captain Einstein you will notice all of the visible effects of special relativity, including all of those discussed previously in this lab. You will find that those effects, particularly time dilation and length contraction drastically alter your relationship with the surrounding environment. While watching the movie, pay close attention to what you are seeing on screen and think about how the phenomena of special relativity are affecting your observations. How to watch: You can watch the 360° movie directly on a smartphone (full screen, high resolution, move your phone to look around) – best view via the YouTube app (search under “Captain Einstein”) . You can also use a VR viewer (click cardboard sign). Plug in your headphones for the full immersive experience.
