The charming theme behind the satirical circus that Joseph Heller creates in his book Catch-22 gives the reader a chance to understand the dilemma between living and dying during a time of war. This theme is the catch-22. No one wants to live considering their current situation while at the same time no one wants to die in the manners that are available to them. So to combat this front, the military creates an interesting position to avoid having a mass amount of people leave active war duty- the rule of catch-22. This rule was first enlightened to the reader by Doc Danneka, who for all proposes, is irony filled due to his lack of concern for the men considering he is the one man employed as a doctor to take care of them. The rule states that any man who was crazy enough could be grounded from flying more missions. But once the person had asked to be ground they were no longer crazy (52). Damned if they did.
