Whilst doing research for another paper, I found myself drawn, almost as if by magic, to the poem Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night by Dylan Thomas. I do not usually like poetry. Poetry is written for a different type of person. Poetry often creates an exclusionary atmosphere with an aloofness that is created, usually unintentional, by poets, but Thomas’s masterpiece does not have that unfortunate quality. It resonates with everyone by touching on a subject that is unavoidable; death. The elements of form, the choice of language, and the content within that poem create an almost palpable power to overcome death by willpower alone. The form of Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night appears to the layman, which in this case refers to me, to not exist. At first glance one notices that the first and third line of each stanza rhyme. The problem is the last stanza is four lines long where all of the others are three lines in length. This seems to take the rigid structure out of this poem. However, this is a unique type of poem called a villanelle. A villanelle is, “written in five tercets, in which the first and last
