Denisse Perez Krueger Contemporary Issues 02/24/12 Country Project Response: Democratic Republic of Congo In researching the DRC, I was immediately intrigued by the country and its development. I was initially surprised by it being a relatively new nation. It was originally a Belgian colony and was only able to gain independence in 1960. However, even the term independence can’t properly describe the state the country went into after being under another country’s rule. The DRC went from one form of oppression to another in the hands of Joseph Mobutu. For 32 years, Mobutu was able to maintain his power through brute force and sham elections. He used the military against the citizens whenever they displayed any form of dissension. I found this to be chillingly similar to the situations today in countries like Syria and Egypt. The public has become towards the government not prioritizing their needs and concerns despite the mutual
