Newton’s second law for translation states that the net external force Σ F acting on an object is equal to the mass m of the object multiplied by the acceleration a of the center of mass of the object. That is, Σ F = m a Newton’s second law for rotation states that the net external torque Σ τ acting on an object about a point is equal to the moment of inertia I of the object about that same point multiplied by its angular acceleration α .
