Chapter 2: Beginnings of English America NAME: MARSHALL, STEPHEN 1.) What rights did the English settlers to America come to enjoy (that colonists in other empires often did not)? a. John Smith wrote that no man will have less freedom than they did in England. They were able to choose their own leadership, have trials by juries, and access to land. They were also afforded greater religious freedoms. 2.) What became the main lure for English emigrants to leave from England to the New World in Virginia (a wild and dangerous land for Europeans)? a. The main lure was the promise of independence that was afforded by owning land, 200 acres as they advertised. Back in England the labor class was struggling in a rough economic time, so the promise of land was very appealing. 3.) In the seventeenth century, who were the two-thirds of English settlers called “indentured servants”? a. The “indentured servants” were of lesser stature or nobility. They could trade approximately 5-7 years of freedom in exchange for passage to America.
