Gifted Learners The concept ‘gifted’ is often used to describe a person who has exceptional intellect, abilities, talents and skills. In the educational setting there are students who perform at high levels in academia when compared to their peers or classmates. The state of Virginia described gifted learners as students from elementary to secondary schools who show superior levels of achievements or potential for higher levels of success when likened to students of the same age, experience or environment. The abilities and capabilities for success are extremely outstanding and that they necessitate special programs to cater to their educational needs. Gifted learners are normally identified by qualified persons in one or more areas such as general and specific intellectual, academic, career, technical, visual or performing arts aptitude (National Association for Gifted Children ,2015). Gifted learners are students who present proof of high achievement abilities in areas such as intellectual, leadership competences and creativity. Some attributes of gifted learners are abilities to solve challenging and unusual problems, to process information quickly, and to understand abstract and difficult concepts (McWilliams, 2018). Gifted learners experience socio-emotional problems that involve difficulty with social relationships, pressures to obey, isolation from peers, defiant towards authority, refusal to do routine and repetitious tasks (Diezmann et.al, 2001).
