Buck 1Ethan BuckMrs. DavisAP Lang Period 23 March 2019The Use of Anabolic SteroidsThe name of the game is bigger, stronger, and faster. For generations, athletes across theglobe have been striving towards physical excellence. Athletes have trained, used different typesof therapy, and devoted their lives to the goal of succeeding in their sport. Until recently, the onlyway to achieve this goal of physical excellence was to put forth full effort tirelessly, day in andday out, while simultaneously implementing different forms of therapy, in order to heal the ath-lete's body for the next day of training (Very Well Fit).Yet, modern advances in the medical field through the work of doctors who specialize inthe betterment of athletes, these doctors have created PED’s (performance enhancing drugs). These PED’s allow athletes to participate in the same types of training, therapy, and recovery asbefore, yet receive results from the work at game-changing rates (Very Well Fit). The most commonly used PED’s in sports are anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are of-ten used in sports where the biggest, strongest, and fastest competitor is successful. For example, football NFL linebackers who were once average in their league, but now choose to use anabolicsteroids, will rise above the competition in their ability to move fast and make big, hard-hittingtackles, a skill that they previously did not possess. So, why don’t all athletes use anabolicsteroids? The answer is that anabolic steroids, along with an array of PED’s, have been made il-legal in professional, college, and high school sports, and if an athlete is caught using they aresubject to punishment from their league and the law. Furthermore, the effects of anabolic steroids
Buck 2have a lasting and devastating impact on the users’ physical and mental health that often leads tocritical physical issues or suicide (Nata Journals). Although many feel that the possible physicaland mental effects are too costly, anabolic steroids will allow for the athlete to grow a largermuscle mass, increase velocity, and gain endurance, which will ultimately improve the athlete’sgame. As previously stated the code for athletic success and the main goal of athletes is to growlarger, be stronger, and be faster, which is exactly what anabolic steroids aim to improve in theathletes. A few of the common anabolic steroids that athletes often choose to use areTestosterone, Androstenedione, and Nandrolone (Drug Abuse). But, what do steroids do inside the body that the athlete’s desire? When an athlete decidesto use anabolic steroids he or she can take them one of two ways. Anabolic steroids are eithertaken orally in the form of a pill or directly injected via a needle into the body of the athlete.
