In fact, to quote the book, “no content standard in any class at any level ismore important than nurturing and building a love of learning.” (Burgess, pg. 78) The author believes thatstudent engagement and teacher involvement are the keys to having a successful classroom.The author discusses different approaches to create deep student engagement, such as passion, immersion,rapport, ask and analyze, transformation and enthusiasm. The book relies heavily on the use of analogies andpersonal anecdotes. The author gives both general and specific ideas for “hooks” to assist teachers inengaging their students, which is very helpful.
