When a particle of mass m has a net force pointing in a certain direction, the particle also has an acceleration vector pointing in the same direction as that of the net force. If the acceleration vector points in the same direction as the velocity vector, then the particle speeds u p. If the acceleration vector points in the opposite direction as the velocity vector, then the particle slows dow n. If the acceleration vector points in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the velocity vector, then the particle turn s (changes direction of travel).
