Name : Joseph “Fitz” Maro Lab Partners : Bryan Keelon and Laura Taylor Title: Comparison of the Energy Content of Fuels Date: November 29, 2007 I hereby declare upon my word of honor that I have neither given nor received unauthorized help on this work. Abstract : - In this lab we investigated the energy content of several hydrocarbon fuels by using them to heat water. The data enabled us to compare fuels to see which ones provided more energy for a given mass of fuel burned. -Our results were reasonably accurate for the situation and limited materials that we were working with. Specifically we found that the candle gave off more heat then the ethanol, but the ethanol absorbed more heat by water than the candle. Keywords: Hydrocarbons: compounds that contain only hydrogen and carbon. Heat: Energy that flows from a hotter to a colder object.
