Running head: QUALITATIVE RESEARCH AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS 1 Qualitative Research and Ethical Considerations Grand Canyon University February 3, 2019
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS 2 Qualitative Research and Ethical Considerations Central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) is a deadly infection that occurs when germs enter the bloodstream through a central line. A CLABSI is confirmed through laboratory work and is unrelated to an infection that may have occurred on another site within the first 48 hours of a central line being placed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2011) states, “Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) result in thousands of death each year and billions of dollars in added costs to the U.S. healthcare system, yet these infections are preventable.” If the reason as to why and how these infections occur is understood, then the possibility of CLABSIs can be prevented. Background of Study McAlearney & Hefner (2014) state, “A central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) can occur when a central venous catheter, a procedure often associated with intensive care unit (ICU) settings, is not inserted correctly or not maintained properly.” This can result in not only a financial cost to the hospital, but also to the society because it can cause a prolongation in hospital stay, morbidity, and death. Mortality rates from CLABSI are 12% to 25%, which is quite significant. The purpose of this study was to determine the perspectives of infection control professionals (ICP) and frontline staff on the barriers that were associated with implementation of a CLABSI prevention protocol. The interview questions asked to the participants included: “Do you have any stories about barriers to introducing and implementing these HAI efforts at this organization? How were these barriers overcome?
