IT329 Homework #1 KEY Date Assigned: 9/26/2007 Due Date: 10/1/07 Module 1 1. The atomic number is the number of Protons in the element. 2. With respect to combining or reacting, the most important electron shell is the outer shell, or valence shell. 3. Metals give up valence electrons when combining with other atoms. 4. Nonmetals gain other electrons when reacting with other atoms. 5. Metals generally have fewer than four electrons while nonmetals have more than four valence electrons. 6. When a liquid metal cools, atoms bond together and unit cell form, and ultimately grains are created. 7. Based on one of slides in Module 1, what is the crystalline lattice structure for each of the following? Aluminum FCC Iron BCC , Titanium HCP 8. When crystal lattices grow and then collide with other crystals, the result is a grain boundary. 9. Larger grains are produced by slow cooling. 10. Density of metals are generally higher than density of ceramics and polymers because of their higher closer packing
