Material Selection Excercise 1 1. Polypropylene can be molded through injection molding, extrusion blow molding, thermoforming, compression molding, and injection blow molding. 2. Plexiglass – (CH3-CH2-C-CO-OCH3)n otherwise known as acrylic 3. Plexiglas is commonly used for aircraft windows, packaging, safety specacles, and automotive tail lights 4. Alumina - Alumina is a technical ceramic that is cheap and easy to process. It is highly used in electrical insulation due to its excellent mechanical strength and temperature resistance. Zirconia – Zirconia is a ceramic with a extremely high melting point of 2760C. It has incredibly high toughness due to the change in crystal structure. Exercise 2 1. Die Casting and Sand Casting 2. Die Casting is commonly used for motor frames, record player and video player chasis, and housings for gearboxes and clutches. Sand Casting is most commonly used for auto engine blocks, cylinder heads, heat exchangers, and other engine parts. 3.
