Biology of Psychological Disorders Book Notes Psychotropic Medications – change brain neurochemistry, affect mental processes Anti-Anxiety Drugs – tranquilizers, used to treat anxiety. Antidepressant – treatments for depression MAO Inhibitors – converts serotonin to another chemical form, prevents the breakdown of serotonin, reserved for those who do not respond to other forms of medication Tricyclics – named for structure, inhibit reuptake many different neurotransmitters and histamine system thus side effects sedation, weight gain SSRI – prevents reuptake of serotonin, Prozac, different side effects insomnia, weight loss, sexual dysfunction. First line drug due to lack of serious side effects AntiPsychotics – neuroleptics, used to treat schizophrenia, reduce hallucinations. Bind to dopamine receptors and block effects of dopamine.

Alternative treatments for depression SAD Photo therapy -- Light Treatments ECT causes brain seizures, for those who respond to no medicines. Relatively effective, but high relapse rate and memory loss. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) relieves depression through magnetism, non-psychotic mainly. Bipolar Treatment Lithium unpleasant side effects, works best on mania. Difficult to maintain usage due to missing highs. Schizophrenia Treatment Antipsychotic Tardive Dyskinesia involuntary movement of the body, side effect of previous drugs. Clozapine potentially dangerous side effects, but no permanent TD.
