Reconstruction Era 31/08/2007 13:27:00 April 14 th  1864-Lincoln is assassinated in Fords Theatre  Andrew Johnson became president in 1865 (Democrat from the South in support  of slavery) Animosity against the south aligns with republicans but he does not fully  relate to the views of radical republicans  Johnson allows for states to re-write constitution and re-admit to the union Black Codes Blacks were essentially not allowed to vote or own property Look up black code and sharecropper contract in Voices book (pg 5) o Marriage is now allowed; after slavery is abolished o Very strict contracts regarding employment Could choose employer but could not terminate employment Forced employment; contracts almost institute a slavery  loophole o Due Process, Habeas Corpus, Right to appear/testify in court o Right to Vote instated (but with KKK can they really vote??) Freedmen’s Bureau
