Latter 19 th to Mid-20 th Century Freedom meant little to social relations between whites and African Americans in sports. After initially playing together, blacks were not hired to play in the major leagues beginning in 1888. African Americans were barred from other professional sports also. More sports jobs available to whites.

Latter 19 th to Mid-20 th Century African Americans formed their own professional leagues. Jack Johnson and Joe Louis were able to win heavyweight boxing crowns. Most African Americans played college sports at black colleges until the 1960’s. Black colleges were quicker to afford athletic opportunities for females.
