Paradoxes of American Sport While seemingly a trivial pursuit, sport is important. Sport has the capacity to build character as well as encourage bad character. While the nature of sport is competition where ability tells, the reality is that race restricts. Schools emphasize sports because of the personal and social benefits for participants, yet these same schools have generally resisted efforts by girls and women for participation and resources equal to those of boys and men.

When we make the value of winning so important that it trumps morality, then we and sports are diminished. While the nature of sport is competition where ability tells, the reality is that race restricts. Rarely found in sports that are usually taught in private clubs. Rarely found where extraordinary up-front money is required. Relegated to team positions where physical attributes are required, but underrepresented where intelligence and leadership are crucial. Underrepresented in non-playing leadership positions. Also underrepresented in ancillary sports positions. Unequal opportunity for equal ability. Resistance of participation and funding for females. Many benefits of participation for females. Title IX in 1972. Participation quadrupled from 1972 to 1996....
