Big stick diplomacy- describes President Theodore Roosevelts policy of foreign relations. The idea of thepicture means to negotiate peacefully with other nations but threaten them with the “big stick” ormilitary muscle.Lusitania- the British ocean liner RMS Lusitania was concluding a voyage from New York to the Englishport of Liverpool when it was struck by a German torpedo and sank. Happened May 7th, 1915 near theIrish coast and 1,198 people were killed 123 Americans and 63 children.Sussex- on March 24, 1916, a German submarine torpedoed a French ship, the Sussex, that the Germansthought was laying mines. It was actually a passenger vessel and thought it did not sink but the attackkilled 50 people. Happened May 4th, 1916, and this caused president Wilson to issue and ultimatum. IfGermany did not end its attacks on passenger ships, the united states would break off diplomaticrelations, which was usually a last step before declaration of war.
