Garrett Winand Rayne English 102.158 19 February 2008 Blindness and Deceit Blindness and deceit are very two very unfortunate circumstances. Where in most cases they can ruin peoples’ lives, may in an unlikely situation make someone’s life better. In the plays Oedipus Rex, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Trifles lives are ruined but in The Importance of Being Earnest a few individuals lives are changed forever for the better. Oedipus Rex involves a lot of blindness and deceit. The blindness is throughout the play, such as when Oedipus meets a man and his retainers on the road and murders them. Oedipus has no idea that the man he killed was his father. The deceit comes into play when Oedipus goes to see an oracle to learn the truth about his parents. The oracle tells him he is going to kill his father and marry his mother, but she fails to tell him who his parents are. Oedipus says the oracle said to him “that I should lie with my mother, breed children from all men would turn their eyes; and I shall be my father’s murderer.”(Sophocles 112) The oracle in the story knew the truth about Oedipus’s situation but she decided not to tell him. After Oedipus kills his father, he is still ignorant as to who his real parents are, so he continues on toward his true home city. When he marries the queen he is in fact marrying his own mother, another major example of blindness when almost no one knows the truth about this situation. When Oedipus discovers that he did in fact marry his mother and kill his father it is not a pleasant discovery. The realization of this
