10/3/07 Chem 331 Section 101 Experiment 1: Recrystallization and Identification of an Unknown Solid Procedure: A small sample of unknown was taken in a vial labeled 131. A 250 milliliter flask was filled with 100 mLs of water and boiled on a hot plate. 1.05g of the unknown sample was weighed and placed into a 125 mL flask. Then, about 10 mL of water was added to the sample till it dissolved. A filtration system was set up with another 125 mL flask and a plastic power funnel with pre-wetted filter paper. The system was then clamped to the lab bench and the filtration system was turned on to purify the compound. The flask was then cooled in a 400 mL ice water bath. Once this was cooled, the compound was then filtered through a Buchner funnel. During the next lab period, the solid compound was then weighed to determine the percent recovery. To determine the identity and purity of the compound, the sample was analyzed through mixed melting points. The melting point of the sample was taken,
