Chapter 20 and 21 Notes-Environmental Chapter 20: Atmosphere and Weather: Atmospheric Structure: o Collection of gases that gravity holds in a thin envelope around Earth o Troposphere: lowest layer, gases are responsible for moderating flow of energy to Earth Involved w/ biogeochemical cycling of many elements and compounds: oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, sulfur, and water Contains practically all water vapor and clouds in atmosphere, source of weather Colder with altitude, pollutants can reach the top in a few days o Tropopause: capping the troposphere o Higher: Above the troposphere is the stratosphere-layer within which temp increases with altitude Increases cuz contains ozone (absorbs high energy radiation emitted by the sun) Substances that enter can remain there for a long time Above stratosphere are the mesosphere and thermosphere-ozone concentration declines and only small amounts of oxygen and nitrogen are found Weather: o Weather: day-to-day variations in temp, air pressure, wind, humidity, and
